Marketing "is the whole business seen...from the customer's point of view," according to Peter Drucker. It takes time, discipline, and money to become customer-focused, but it is worth it. Instead of relying on Big Data, focus on customers. To start, run focus groups and surveys.

To stay customer-focused, improve customer retention, analyze customer feedback, and listen to salespeople and R&D people. Hear more than what you want to hear, and act rather than believing customers are stupid. Provide a unified face to the customer and remember they don't care about your problems.

Being customer-focused is hard work, but it pays off. It is the only way to really understand customers and remain competitive.
