Four Things Introverts Can Teach Us About Networking

Elon Musk, Warren Buffet, and Bill Gates are all introverts who have found success in business, despite their need to put themselves out there and build relationships. Introverts can be just as successful as extroverts, but they go about it differently. Here are four lessons that successful introverts can offer about networking.

1. Build on your current network Start by leveraging the small network you have, and nurture it and gradually grow it into a massive, dense list of quality connections. Micah Baldwin suggests starting with former colleagues, classmates, old bosses, alums, and neighbors.

2. Strategize Successful people take the initiative to methodically seek out potentially important contacts. Stay focused and be willing to learn and grow. Create mutually beneficial relationships that you’re willing to work on, and have an idea of what you want, so you can narrow down your list.

3. Be proactive Networking takes real time, so be willing to put in the effort. Keep in touch, build trust, and be willing to communicate. Don’t just exchange business cards and banalities; create meaningful relationships.

4. Diversify Don’t just focus on people who are like you. Explore new territories and be willing to meet different people. You want your network to be mutually beneficial, and as you build up your network, your connectedness will be valuable.
